On October 25, the Nyingchi 500kV Substation of the Central Tibet Grid Connection Project, which is the most complex and challenging plateau power transmission and transformation project in the world, was successfully put into operation!

The Central Tibet Grid Connection Project consists of the Central Tibet and Changdu Grid Connection Project and the Power Supply Project for the Lhasa-Nyingchi Section of the Sichuan-Tibet railway. The project starts from Markam County, Changdu, and ends in Sangri County, Shannan, spanning three cities, and ten districts and counties. The total investment of the project is about 16.2 billion yuan, which is for building or expanding 16 substations of 110 kV and above, and building 2,738 kilometers of new lines of 110 kV and above. This is the power transmission and transformation project with the highest altitude, the largest altitude span and the most complex natural conditions in the world after the Qinghai-Tibet grid connection and Sichuan-Tibet grid connection projects. After being completed and put into operation, the project will not only interconnect the central and eastern power grids in Tibet and become a hub connecting Qinghai-Tibet and Sichuan-Tibet power grids, but also will promote the transmission of Tibet’s clean energy to other regions and ensure the power supply to the Sichuan-Tibet Railway and the Yunnan-Tibet Railway. It is a model project that benefits the people of all ethnic groups in Tibet, enhances national unity, and contributes to the construction of a prosperous and stable new Tibet.

The Nyingchi 500 kV new substation is located in Jiarika Village, Puqu Township, Nyingchi City, Tibet Autonomous Region, with an altitude of 3,040 meters and a total area of 6.1625 hectares. In this phase, two sets of 750MVA 500kV main transformers were installed. There were four 500kV outgoing lines, with 2 to Yazhong and 2 to Bomi; There were six 200kV outgoing lines, with 2 to Mainling Traction Station, 2 to Wolong and 2 to Puqu (Nyingchi). After the successful operation, the substation can meet the power supply needs of the Lhasa-Nyingchi electrified railway, the access needs of the nearby hydropower stations, and the grid connection needs of central Tibet grid and Changdu grid, and supply power to the nearby areas, thus comprehensively improving the capacity and reliability of power supply in the relevant regions.

The Nyingchi Substation is located in a plateau area with high altitude and severe coldness. The harsh construction environment, the poor topographic and geological conditions, and the difficult transportation were major hindrances to the field service engineers of CYG SUNRI. Engineers had to "tramp over mountains” before they arrived at the project site. Altitude sickness such as headache, insomnia and even dyspnea always tortured the body and mind of them. However, in order to successfully put the project into operation as scheduled, CYG SUNRI’s engineers overcame difficulties and raced against time, and finally they successfully put the Nyingchi Substation into operation!
